Panera CEO: ‘We care about your money but not your life’

paneraFor full disclaimer, prior to last week I’d find myself dining at Panera at least one to two times a week.  I can’t stand normal fast food like Burger King or McDonalds and I like the approach Panera has taken to fresher foods, less GMO’s and hormone free meats.

Last Monday Panera CEO Ron Shaich went on record saying:

Within our company, we strive to create Panera Warmth. This warmth means bakery-cafes where customers and associates feel comfortable and welcome. To this end, we ask that guns not be brought into this environment unless carried by an authorized law enforcement officer. Panera respects the rights of gun owners, but asks our customers to help preserve the environment we are working to create for our guests and associates.”

Which roughly translates to: ‘We care about your money, not your life’.  So no Ron, you don’t respect our Rights.  Not at all. You see it’s not about “carrying a gun” into your establishments, it’s about defending our lives and the lives of innocent people.  The firearm just so happens to be one of the most effective means of self defense available to humanity at this point in time and the Right to self defense is the most basic Right an individual has.

It is still to be seen if Panera will take the next step and place “No Gun” signs in their restaurants or if they will take a Starbucks approach and have a “please  don’t but we won’t be posting signs or asking you to leave” type of Don’t ask Don’t tell policy.

The last 6 major corporations to announce a “gun free zone” in their establishments have all had one thing in common, within 72 hours a horrific event took place in at least one of their stores.  This was no different.

2-Deputies-Suspect-Killed-in-Shooting-at-Panera-Bread-Restaurant-in-MarylandWithin 36 hours of Ron’s proclamation an evil, deranged patron of a Maryland Panera would draw his ILLEGAL concealed handgun and shoot a Harford County Deputy in the head at point blank range while that officer sat next to him.  You can read more about that and my thoughts on it HERE .

The entire packed restaurant had to sit in horror, helpless per the wishes of the Panera CEO.

Choices for locations to eat abound in my area, including options with fresh ingredients and minimally processed meats with no hormones.  I will miss my meals at Panera and I’ll be forwarding a link to this article along with my Panera Rewards card number to Panera’s corporate headquarters.

In 2016, with all the data available as to lawful concealed carriers saving lives and stopping mass murderers it is beyond me how anyone could want to turn their establishments into soft and easy target for mad men or for terrorists.

BREAKING: Fourth Circuit Strikes down Maryland Assault Weapons ban

fourth circuitBREAKING:

When it comes to Maryland’s Assault Weapons and High Capacity Magazine bans the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, in a 2-1 decision, has ruled:

In our view, Maryland law implicates the core protection of the Second Amendment—’the right of law-abiding responsible citizens to use arms in defense of hearth and home,’ District of Columbia v. Heller, 554 U.S. 570, 635 (2008), and we are compelled by Heller and McDonald v. City of Chicago, 561 U.S. 742 (2010), as well as our own precedent in the wake of these decisions, to conclude that the burden is substantial and strict scrutiny is the applicable standard of review for Plaintiffs’ Second Amendment claim.

The ruling is still disturbing in my opinion because it continues to reference phrases like “in common use by the citizenry” and relies quite heavily on them.  This is disturbing because it implies that new weapons for self defense may not be covered because they aren’t already “in common use”.

Over all, it’s a well deserved win but like everything else it seems, plain and simple language like “shall not be infringed” isn’t always quite so plain and simple.  Even when the court rules “strict scrutiny” needs to be applied.

Chris Cox of the NRA had this to say about the ruling:
“The Fourth Circuit’s ruling is an important victory for the Second Amendment. Maryland’s ban on commonly owned firearms and magazines clearly violates our fundamental, individual right to keep and bear arms for self-defense. The highest level of judicial scrutiny should apply when governments try to restrict our Second Amendment freedoms.” – Chris W. Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action

Again that horrid “commonly owned” term continues to rear it’s ugly head.

In any event, a win is a win and this is one worth drinking to.

Bushnell at SHOT show and their new “Yes that’s covered”

bushnell trophy x30

Bushnell Trophy Xtreme X30

Technically Bushnell announced their new No Questions Asked  warranty about a week before SHOT show 2016 at the ATA in Louisville, KY but it was during SHOT show I got to go over the new warranty policy with JJ Reich and Jake Edson in person.

The new, or perhaps I should also say extended, warranty now applies to all riflescopes, binoculars and spotting scopes in the Trophy, Trophy Xtreme, Legend, Elite and Elite Tactical lines.

The warranty is very simple:  Read more »

Savage Arms at SHOT show 2016 and the new 110 BA Stealth

savage 10 and 110 wm

110 BA Stealth top, 10 BA Stealth bottom

While at SHOT show 2016 I broke news of the new Savage Arms 10 and 110 BA Stealth rifles via our social media pages: Facebook.com/GunReviews and Instagram.com/13Cgunreviews .

While the 10 and 110 series aren’t new to Savage the Stealth is and it shaves down some weight as well as the price tag yet still maintains the features and quality you would expect from the 10/110 line.

For those not familiar the 10 model designates the short action and the 110 the long action.  For the Stealth line, the 10 will be chambered in either .308 Winchester or 6.5 Creedmoor.  The 110 will be available in 300 Win-Mag or .338 Lapua. Read more »

SHOT Show 2016 coverage delayed due to flood…

Water flowing from garage door opener outlet

Water flowing from garage door opener outlet

Yes, you read that correctly but the flood is actually at the 13C hacienda.  Upon returning from SHOT Show 2016 I found a pipe had burst here completely flooding the garage,  it would seem we had a long power outage with the temperatures hovering near the 0 degree mark.  My main focus over the weekend was trying to minimize the damage and the inventory losses.

I’m writing the post after getting home Monday night (Tuesday morning) after being gone 19 hours today for the day job, so forgive any type-O’s or the occasional run-on.

We had a blast at SHOT show, from Industry Day at the Range to 4 full days on the floor, it was non-stop…

Selecting an AR15 and the Mk4 RCE from CMMG

cmmg mk4 on hedgeIn a previous article we talked about the question of “Which AR should I buy?” and how it isn’t as straight forward of a question as it might first seem.

Today I’ll talk about some of the features I look for in a an AR-15 and things to keep in mind while making your selection, or selecting pieces to build your rifle.

My perspective for answering this question in this article will be a rifle well suited for defense, extremely reliable and an accuracy of 1″ at 100 yards or better with quality match ammunition.  These qualities will also lend themselves to making an excellent plinker as well.

Which AR-15 should I buy?

rows of AR15sIn a market saturated with AR-15’s I constantly get asked “Which AR should I buy?”   It’s long overdue I dedicate some time to this topic because it’s not as straight forward as it seems nor is it a simple question to answer without asking some questions in return.

Prices on new AR-15’s range anywhere from about $499 if you build it yourself using the least expensive components you can find, or get a “black friday” deal on an entry type of rifle, to thousands of dollars if you go full tilt.

Generally I try to find out what the buyer is looking for in the rifle, as opposed to going strictly off a price point because once you start looking at adding on options, that base price isn’t as attractive as it first seemed.
